Problem in Recovering Data from the Broken Hard Drive ?

I have got a hard drive of Maxtor of 500 GB which seems to me that it is broken. On inserting the hard drive to the computer, it gets successfully installed but the hard drive is not shown in my computer. But when I am clicking on the hard drive by going through Computers > Properties > Hardware, the drive is not able to show the contents stored in it. Moreover on installing the drive, it is making strange kind of noises and the computer shuts down abnormally. Is there any way through which I can access the contents of the hard drive?
