How to copy data from a broken hard drive of Mac ?

I have got a Mac Book with a hard drive memory of 300 GB. The hard drive is broken and I can’t really read the contents from the hard drive. I have purchased a new hard drive and I cannot copy the data from the broken drive to the new hard drive. To solve this problem, I have tried to alter the disk but the disk utility appears to be busy. Furthermore the utility later on says that the operation has failed. What should I do to get rid of the problem so that I can easily copy the data to the new hard drive from the broken hard drive?
