Is there any software for recovery of erased HD? ?

I have been using iPhone for quite a sometime and felt like upgrading it. So, yesterday I plugged in my iPhone 3G in iTunes to upgrade it to 3.0 OS. However there was no backup for the data in my iPhone. While I was upgrading the OS, a problem occurred somewhere and the iTunes asked me to restore it. Accidentally I clicked on the Restore option without ever thinking that there was no backup made for the data in the iPhone. As a result of which, all the data is lost including contacts, sms etc. So, I was looking out for some software for MAC OS that can do the recovery since the erased HD is not appearing on my computer.
