Mac Internal File System Error: Reason and Solutions!

Computers that use the HFS or HFS+ formatted storage device are generally divided into one or more volumes that are further divided into sectors. These sectors are known as logical block in HFS Volumes. Mac operating system uses a catalog file to keep track all the files, threads, directories and directory thread on volume. This file is B*-tree and so has the derive directory contents. So if this directory tree faces problems then you will see various error messages and require re-formatting the volume. Reason:

Internal File System Error ” is an HFS Error that occurs that shows that the file system is badly affected from some internal inconsistencies. The reason behind this is the damage of directory tree.

Solution:

  • To correct the minor directory damages, a tool is provided with the disk utility and is known as Disk First Aid . It checks and repairs the imperfections with the HFS and HFS+ formatted volumes. Using this tool you can repair Extent B-Tree, Catalog B-Tree, Catalog File and Volume Info etc. To do this startup the Mac from System Tools disk and run the Disk First Aid to repair minor damages.
  • Try to Rebuild the Desktop Environment. To Do so press and hold the option and command keys together while starting up the Mac till a message appears that asks whether you want to rebuild the desktop.
  • Run fsck in single user mode.
  • Reinstall the System and Application Software
  • Restore all the data from the previously taken backup. If the backups were corrupted, then you need to use the software like Mac Data Recovery.
